These events help our students, faculty and all the participants to exchange ideas and thoughts and bring in new perspectives. Social learning is the key to gaining knowledge and can best develop through grounded interactions with others at conferences and seminars. Besides helping participants gain deeper insights into the subject under discussion, such events also help in finding answers to professional problems. To help students and attendees gain a broader perspective on subjects related to management education, IIMC play host to a number of conferences and seminars every year. Conferences & Seminars 2012Finance Lecture Series IIM Calcutta, 2 March, 2012 As a part of Finance Lecture Series ‐ an initiative of the Financial Research and Trading Laboratory at IIM Calcutta, the world‐renowned accounting theorist and experimental economist, Prof. Shyam Sunder, James L. Frank Professor of Accounting, Economics and Finance, Yale School of Management spoke on "Financing of a Public Good by Taxation in a General Equilibrium Economy: Theory and Experimental Evidence." The talk was held in the Financial Research and Trading Laboratory of IIM Calcutta. Professor Ashok Banerjee, Professor of Finance and Control and the coordinator of Financial Research & Trading Laboratory introduced the speaker. The Director of IIM Calcutta, Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri and about 15 IIM Calcutta professors from all academic groups were present. Students and Professors from Jadavpur University (economics department) also attended the lecture. At the end of the talk, Prof. Ashok Banerjee, felicitated and thanked Prof. Sunder for his lecture at Finance Lab. The primary objective of the lecture series is to listen to and interact with the best academic minds in the area of corporate finance, and financial markets. CARISMA-IIM Calcutta Workshop, IIM Calcutta, 14-17 March, 2012 The CARISMA-IIM Calcutta Workshop on Optimization Methods, Risk Analysis and News Analytics and their application in the field of Finance was held from 14 -17 of March 2012 at the Financial Research and Trading Lab of IIM Calcutta. This workshop series is specially designed to provide insight into the discipline of optimization for a wide range of individuals such as Operation Research (OR) professionals, financial quantitative analysts, risk analysts, consultants, DSS application developers, and academics. The focus was on providing a clear view of optimization and its application in solving business problems. The workshop was jointly organized by The Centre for the Analysis of Risk and Optimization Modeling (CARISMA) of Brunel University, London and IIM Calcutta. Speakers were from CARISMA and IIM Calcutta. The workshop was divided into three sections. Part I was for Linear & Integer Programming: Modelling Systems and embedded DSS, while Parts II & III were for Stochastic Optimization Modeling and Solutionmethods & News Analytics. A total of 35 participants from 14 Indian states and 1 overseas participant from Oman attended this workshop. Finance Lecture Series, IIM Calcutta, 13 June, 2012 A talk was held in the Financial Research and Trading Laboratory (Finance Lab) of IIM Calcutta on 13 June 2012 as part of the ongoing Financial Lecture Series. Prof. Utpal Bhattacharya, Associate Professor, Finance at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business spoke on “Firm Mortality and Natal Financial Care". Professor Ashok Banerjee, Professor of Finance and Control and the coordinator of Financial Research & Trading Laboratory introduced the speaker. About 10 IIM Calcutta professors from all academic groups were present. IIMC FP students as well as students from other institutions like IIT Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur, IGIDR, Calcutta University and Professors from Institutions in and around Kolkata like Heritage Institute of Technology, Vidyasagar University etc. also attended the lecture. Workshop on Case Writing, Teaching and Research, IIM Calcutta, 14-15 June, 2012 The newly launched Indian Institute of Management Calcutta Case Research Centre (IIMCCRC) held its first workshop on Case Writing, Teaching and Research in the IIM Calcutta campus on June 14-15, 2012. The two day workshop saw three eminent speakers. Day 1 had 2 workshops- Managing Case Writing conducted by Mr. Jeroen van den Berg, Center Manager of the Center for Business Case Studies, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, followed by Case Selection and Case Writing by Ms. Anjali Raina, Executive Director, Harvard Business School India Research Center. Day 2 had one workshop- Art of Case Writing conducted by Prof. Jim Erskine, Emeritus Professor of Operations Management, Richard Ivey School of Business, Canada. A total of 120 participants from 16 Indian states attended this workshop. Out of 120, there were 26 students (IIMC FP students), and rest were academicians/researchers. The workshop provided a great opportunity to learn from these three leaders in case writing, teaching, and research and network with speakers associated with the three leading case repositories in the world - Ivey, HBS, and ACRC (HKU). The workshop was initially designed for 80 candidates but the registration had to be reopened and the number of seats raised to 120 in order to accommodate candidates wanting to participate in it. India Finance Conference 2012 (IFC 2012), IIM Calcutta, 19 - 21, December, 2012 The India Finance Conference 2012 (IFC 2012), jointly organized by Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad will be held during December 19 - 21, 2012 at IIM Calcutta. The Conference will have discussions on themes like asset pricing and volatility in financial markets, corporate finance decisions, including choice of capital structure and dividend policy, innovations in both financial and operational risk management, quality of financial reporting and adoption of IFRS, role of corporate governance, executive compensation and ownership structure, computational finance, high frequency trading and financial econometrics and financial policies, inclusion, institutions and regulations.
